- How does Kale work?
You download the mobile app (for iPhone/iOS devices, find Kale for iOS on iTunes store; we do not support Android/Windows phones yet) and use it to take photos of your meals before you eat. You can follow the global feed to see what everyone else is eating, and we encourage leaving comments to promote healthier foods.
- Why should I keep track of what I eat?
Tracking your food helps you become aware of the stuff you're eating. If you've ever tried changing a habit (say, going to the gym, walking more, brushing your teeth, etc.) but haven't recorded the changes, you probably found out that a month later you were back where you started. No habit change!
By tracking your habits you are motivated to keep pushing forward. Using Kale is the easiest way we've found to track what you eat. No need to count calories, or itemize each thing you stick in your mouth, or try to log it all by hand. All you need is a simple picture or note to remind you of what you had.
We're working on doing a bit of the heavy-lifting with your data. So far we're able to track the time of day, what you eat, and whether you're proud of it. Using that data, we're trying to correlate how that affects the types of food you eat, and help you find triggers to eat healthier foods. Our goal is to provide recommendations based on your habits to help you succeed!
- You guys seem to promote a Paleo/Primal diet - why so picky?
While Kale can be used to track any sort of diet, we firmly believe in the "real food" aspect of Paleo/Primal eating. This belief stems from our own experiences, but more importantly from the nutrition science community at-large. Folks like Diane Sanfilippo, Loren Cordain, Ph.D, Robb Wolf, Mark Sisson, Sarah Fragoso, Paul Jaminet, Ph.D, Tim Ferriss, Chris Kresser, L.AC, and many others have been iterating through diet approaches to find what works and what doesn't. It's not perfect, but it's the best we've got... so far!
- Do I need to pay for Kale?
The most important thing for our team is to help people live healthier lives. We know (and it's been proven) that keeping track of what you eat will have a significant impact on your health. We also believe that good things take time, and time has its costs. We're not trying to "hit a million users"; we're trying to help YOU feel better about your body.
That means we need to focus on sustainability, and the best way we've found (so far) is to build tools for professionals. If you're a personal trainer, a wellness coach, a dietitian, a gym owner, or just an enthusiastic foodie, we can provide you tools to more easily manage your clients/groups/communities, and help them eat healthier. (More info on this in the next FAQ below.)
But we're still testing out a bunch of different approaches, and we're improving our system every single day. We want to make this the best experience possible for helping you live healthier through eating better foods, so we take every request seriously.
- I'm a professional (wellness coach, dietitian, personal trainer) and want to use Kale to help my clients. How do I get started?
We're working with professionals like you to build the best tool for helping you help your clients. Our professional service includes the ability to create groups, easily monitor your clients via a web dashboard, and weekly progress reports letting you know who needs help, and how to help them.
If you'd like to try Kale, you're in luck. We're looking for professionals to work with through our beta. Please contact us for more information on bringing Kale to your business.
- I want a copy of all my meals. How do I get it?
We strongly believe in open data. We're working on an open API to allow developers to build awesome apps or integrate Kale into their platforms.
In the meantime, if you want to download a copy of all your meals at any time, please send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll help you get a copy. In the future, we'll have an easy button you can click that will let you download it without having to contact us.
